I cannot sleep at all….so much on my mind
I have taken melatonin before for my insomnia and it helps a lot, but after about 1 or 2 weeks of consistent use, the effects start to wear off and you have to take a break without it if you want to feel the effects of it again. The only problem is that during these few days it makes insomnia even worse because your body is used to having an excess amount so it does not produce as much as it should naturally.
It is true that it increases dream vividness greatly with few side effects. I can sometimes clearly recall up to 4 or 5 dreams a night with it if I focus my mind to dream recall. It also increases lucid dream frequency without a specific trigger telling you that is a dream… you just sort of realize that is is a dream out of nowhere.
The dosage varies from person to person so it isn't really possible to give an exact amount. I am about 6 feet tall and 180 pounds and my doctor recommended that I take no more than 2 mg unless I am having very bad insomnia on certain nights. You should not take any more than what you need because it will make you very tired in the morning and dosages more than 5 mg have given terrifying nightmares to test subjects. Start out small and increase the amount if you need to, but try not to take it for extended periods of time.

The dosage and the brand are not the problem.
1) More is not better. It's not a sleeping pill, it is not true that a higher dose = a stronger effect. The quantities sold over-the-counter are ALWAYS too high. Buy the smallest concentration you can find and it will be more than enough. 3mg- time release or not- is way more than enough.
2) Like I said- it is not a sleeping pill, it is a natural hormone that normally starts to increase in the body several hours before bedtime. So, you want to take it right after dinner and not right before bedtime.
The problem you are having with sleep is probably not because you don't make enough melatonin, it probably has something to do with trouble cycling through sleep stages. It's not a hormonal problem, it is a cognitive problem. Do you find that you are tired during the day, but then feel wide awake (mind racing) and cannot sleep at night? If so, here is what is happening.
When you start to nod off during the day, but then jerk yourself back awake, you are training your brain that it is not supposed to get too relaxed. So, at night, when it is time for your brain to relax, it thinks that it is supposed to wake back up. When you start to fall asleep at a meeting, your brain is drifting into slower alpha or theta rhythms. Then you snap yourself awake and force it up into high beta rhythms. So now, your brain snaps up into beta rhythms anytime it starts to go down into theta.
You need to change what you do during the day. Several times during the day, go into a quiet room and close your eyes. This will allow your brain to settle into slow alpha-theta rhythms for a few minutes. It "gives permission" to your brain to settle down into these rhythms without snapping back up into beta. Once it has un-learned the reflex of jumping into high beta every time it starts to get into deeper sleep stages, you can cycle through your sleep stages normally and stay asleep through the normal sleep stages.
