thank you. We actually did it when we had to teach the class for a period. It worked quite well in the end ;)

It's not a stupid question… it shows that you're interested your science project!

The "flavored" Alka-Seltzer tablets *should* work as well as the regular ones.
It's the reaction between citric acid and sodium bicarbonate (baking
soda) contained in the tablets which dissolve and release carbon dioxide.
That release of carbon dioxide should build up sufficiently to launch your rocket.
Here's a good website about how Alka-Seltzer Rockets work:

As I mentioned above, one of the ingredients in Alka-Seltzer is baking soda.
Baking soda is really, really cheap.
Mixing it with vinegar, (also cheap) will give you an awesome rocket,
capable of reaching heights of 100 feet, according to this website:

    Good luck in your studies,

faster and more powerful reaction in tablet form must eat away to center, when crushed all at once

    more bang for the buck

The Collision theory, proposed by Max Trautz[1] and William Lewis in 1916 and 1918, qualitatively explains how chemical reactions occur and why reaction rates differ for different reactions.[2] This theory is based on the idea that reactant particles must collide for a reaction to occur, but only a certain fraction of the total collisions have the energy to connect effectively and cause the reactants to transform into products. This is because only a portion of the molecules have enough energy and the right orientation (or "angle") at the moment of impact to break any existing bonds and form new ones. The minimal amount of energy needed for this to occur is known as activation energy. Particles from different elements react with each other by releasing activation energy as they hit each other. If the elements react with each other, the collision is called successful, but if the concentration of at least one of the elements is too low, there will be fewer particles for the other elements to react with and the reaction will happen much more slowly. As temperature increases, the average kinetic energy and speed of the molecules increases but this only slightly increases the number of collisions. The rate of the reaction increases with temperature increase because a higher fraction of the collisions overcome the activation energy.

Nitroglycerin or glyceryl trinitrate is broken down in the body to nitric oxide a potent vasodilator, in other words causes the blood vessels to dilate.
Even though the compound is the same as that used in explosives, I believe it is a much lower concentration in the tablets, ointments and pastes used in medicine. Moreover, additives are added that will stabilize the molecule.

To understand the existence of gravity in this “zero gravity” situation, compare the “free-falling” space station, in which objects seem to float because they, and all observers, are also in free-fall, to an imagined *tower* that is as tall as the space station is high. At the top of that 200-mile tall tower, *nothing* would float; objects would just weigh about 10% less than they do on the earth’s surface.

    Mostly no.
There is so much starch relative to NG in the
    tablet that it's effectively inert.
You're talking about 0.0005 gm per tablet.
(One gram is about the strength of the charge
    in a single blasting cap.)
You'd have quite a problem collecting a couple
    of thousand of those pills.

They can burn but in order to explode they would need to have the excipients removed and be detonated. I have no idea how you would go about doing that. But, in answer to your question, the active ingredient is the same as the nitroglycerine used in explosives.

  • volz deb

I suspect someone would get suspicious when you purchased 500 pounds of Nitroglycerin tablets. easier to make it yourself.

The pursuit of understanding through the process of scientific experimentation is invaluable. I would rather we spend billions on experiments like this than even one cent on producing war.

The independent variable is the temperature of the water. That is the variable you control and change.

The dependent variable is how long it takes the tablet to dissolve. Assuming all the other variables are unchanged (amount of water, size of tablet, shape of container for water, etc.), how long it takes to dissolve will depend on the temperature of the water.

A resolved question asks the same thing and apparently the medicine is a mono glyceride whereas the explosive kind is a tri glyceride (N03 groups).

How many Alka-Seltzer tablets would it take to fill a bathtub with fizzy goodness? I feel an experiment coming on.

  • cozzi

ok your half way to makeing gelignite but next time soke some of the nitro into saw dust(dynamite)and the rest goes into the nitrocellulose and finally get some kno3 and dissolve thats and your gonna have the first plastic explsoive ever made. i mean the first ever in history not as in your the first to make
